A s'more (alternatively spelled as smore) is a confection consisting of toasted marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched betwe two pieces of graham cracker. S'mores are popular in the United States and Canada, and traditionally cooked over a campfire. In camping, s'mores are a popular treat for many.
S'more is a contraction of the phrase some more. A s'more recipe appeared in a Campfire Marshmallows cookbook in the early 1920s,
Where it was called a Graham Cracker Sandwich. The text indicates that the treat was already popular with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1927, a recipe for Some More was published in Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.

A 1956 recipe uses the name S'Mores, and lists the ingredits as a sandwich of two graham crackers, toasted marshmallow, and ½ chocolate bar. A 1957 Betty Crocker cookbook contains a similar recipe under the name s'mores.
S'mores are traditionally cooked over a campfire, although they can also be made at home over the flame of a wood-burning fireplace, in an ov, over a stove's flame, in a microwave, with a s'mores-making kit, in an air fryer, or in a panini press. A marshmallow, usually held by a metal or wood skewer, is heated over the fire until it is gold brown. Traditionally, the marshmallow is gooey but not burnt, but, depding on individual preferce and cooking time, marshmallows can range from barely warm to charred. The roasted marshmallow is th sandwiched betwe two halves of a graham cracker and a piece of chocolate (or with chocolate on both top and bottom), betwe the graham crackers.
Various confections containing graham cracker, chocolate, and marshmallow are oft sold as some derivative of a s'more, but they are not necessarily heated or served in the same shape as the traditional s'mores. The Hershey's S'mores bar is one example. Kellogg's Pop-Tarts also feature a s'mores variety. In the UK, the lack of graham crackers is easily improvised with digestive biscuits with a slab of Cadbury's chocolate. Chocolate digestives have a major advantage wh lacking a piece of chocolate. Contemporary recipes can substitute other foods, such as potato chips, Nutella and Peeps, for the classic ingredits.The best graham crackers are mildly sweet, deliciously crunchy, and make excellent “bread” for a chocolate and marshmallow sandwich. We tasted more than a dozen popular graham cracker brands and varieties to find the absolute best graham crackers for s’mores.
Nutella S'mores With Homemade Graham Crackers
Graham crackers don’t get enough credit. They’re too sweet to eat with cheese, but they’re not quite sweet enough to count as cookies when a hankering for dessert hits, so they kind of wind up in this in-between realm alongside animal crackers, which I’m confident people would more openly disdain if they weren’t super nostalgic and didn’t come in fun shapes.
Personally, my favorite way to eat graham crackers is to break up a stack, put them in a bowl, cover them in milk, and smush them until they become a sweet porridge. (Yes, I am an adult woman and not a baby, and, yes, I have teeth, but I’m telling you this is delicious.) But you can’t deny that the most popular graham cracker application is s’mores. Their mild sweetness makes them a perfect vehicle for cloying ingredients like chocolate and marshmallows.
If s’mores are on the menu, I think most people just grab a box of Honey Maid and call it a day, but I’m pleased to report that there’s a whole world of graham crackers out there with different textures and flavors and levels of sweetness. Before you spark up the campfire, give this list of the best graham crackers a long, hard look.

I’ve said it before and I’ll certainly say it again: Some things are classics for a reason. Honey Maid graham crackers are a classic because they’re great. If you haven’t had graham crackers in a minute, you’re probably thinking, “Eh, little dry, little boring.” But these have a lot going on! In addition to that distinct and timeless “graham” flavor, Honey Maid graham crackers have an excellent honey sweetness and really taste more like cookies as you chew. They fill your mouth with the flavor of a real-deal baked good. Yup, the best graham crackers for s’mores are exactly what you thought they’d be.
You gotta love a graham cracker that comes perfectly shaped for s’mores, right? With these squares from Trader Joe’s, there’s no perforation to contend with and therefore less chance you wind up with a bunch of oddly shaped, jagged chunks of cracker that aren’t suitable for chocolate and marshmallow sandwiching. Besides the shape, we really liked this cracker’s flavor and density. They’re surprisingly sweet (I swear they have a bit of a toasted marshmallow flavor built in) and sturdy enough to hold up to a bumpy ride to the campsite or the egregious amount of marshmallow and chocolate you might want to stack on them. But don’t let their sturdiness fool you. These are still crispy, light, and pleasant when you take a bite. If you’re looking for utility in a graham cracker, especially if you’re making s’mores, these are the best graham crackers you can buy.
Smores On A Stick (smore Pops)
These cinnamon-spiced graham crackers from Honey Maid aren’t a huge departure from the original, but they taste different enough to make a more interesting s’more, especially if cinnamon is your thing. Don’t worry: This isn’t Red Hots cinnamon; this is Cinnamon Toast Crunch cinnamon. My favorite part about these is that the cinnamon-sugar coating that graces the top of these GCs gives them a little extra crunch and texture. And the subtle cinnamon flavor really makes a s’more just a little more interesting and sophisticated. We tried a handful of cinnamon-coated graham crackers from other brands, but these were the best cinnamon graham crackers by far.
These generic graham crackers from Kroger have a signature graham-y taste, but also have a hit of something citrusy that makes them taste like a graham cracker-animal cracker hybrid. If you’re going with something unique, like Sour Patch marshmallows (which we loved) or another fruity-flavored marshmallow, these pair perfectly. Terrible name, good graham cracker.
I don’t think any of us expected gluten-free graham crackers to be quite this good. These Honeygrams from Schar are definitely sweeter than other graham crackers, which makes them a bit more like cookies than crackers. But if you’re making s’mores with, say, a bitter dark chocolate (maybe something with a sprinkle of sea salt?), the combo won’t be too cloying. This is the perfect graham cracker for a fancified s’more, though I’ll warn you that the box we got was totally pulverized by the time it got to our office. Maybe bring a back-up box of something like Honey Maid to the campground.
Gluten Free Graham Crackers {dairy Free Option}
Pamela, I don’t know you, but I think I love you. Like Schar, these graham crackers are gluten-free, which means they go ahead and lean into the fat factor. The number one ingredient listed on the box? Butter. BUTTER. That makes for an excellent, decadent, albeit slightly crumbly graham cracker. But, hey, s’mores are a mess regardless, so if you can make peace with some crumbs (or you’re making your s’more in a more controlled environment like your kitchen) these are an incredibly tasty option.
